Are you here because you are curious about HK Lux Co signs for sale?! We promise that we are diligently working away on the final details to start producing these sweet lights for sales.  One of the items that we are finalizing right now are the custom injection molded parts which are a special detail that we are designing and having produced locally to ensure that our marquee lights are top notch.

Funds made from L O V E signage rentals this spring and summer will be put towards funding the production of the custom metal molds that are required to make the custom injection molded parts.  We are also investigating setting up a Kickstarter campaign to help raise the funds to fabricate the spensy metal molds.  Stay tuned for those details as well, as we'll be sharing information about our process as we finalize our fabrication process and grow HK Lux Co, right here on the HK Lux Co bloggity.

Oh man were we excited when we received a message from Kait that she would like to chat with us for a piece on HK Lux Co. in an upcoming issue of Swerve Magazine.  Swerve Magazine is a Calgary focused events and lifestyle publication that comes out with the Calgary Herald every Friday!  After we picked our jaws up off of the floor we were squealing with excitement (okay, Lacey was squealing, and Brett was high fiving) over this incredible opportunity to really share our little growing biz with the people of Calgary!
Picture
We met with Kait on a Saturday in December for the interview at Brett's condo, in the East Village, where we've been doing the bulk of our work on HK Lux Co.  The day was beautiful and sunny - and it turns out the photography gods were smiling down upon us ;)  Yay when you look decent in a photo - and for the natural light that was spilling in.  Checkout the article and let us know what you think!  We'd love to hear from you in the comments section below!

The article can be found here:  HKLuxCo. in Swerve
And you can find more writing by Kait here: Kait's Website

OH!...and just a quick update on our lighting for purchase launch:  We're currently working through the CSA certification process to ensure that our lights are safe, and we're also working through the creation of custom pieces for our custom strings of lights - custom out the ying yang folks!  But as these things take time please stay tuned for blog posts here and for photos and updates on facebook, twitter and instagram while we work through these steps to grow HKLuxCo on our adventure to #LightUpYYC!

Meet our Local... Welder: Ian Rowe

1/20/2015

Calgary is teeming with eager local talent and that's what we are built on - literally!  As we go along this marquee lighting adventure, we will introduce you to our skilled team of locals.

To kick this off we are incredibly stoked to introduce you to one of our welders - Ian Rowe.  This Gen Y welder knows what he wants and he's making it happen.
Picture
Ian, who turns out to be a unicorn (born in Calgary and still living here), has a quiet confidence - an air of assuredness about him.  He is confident in his skill and for good reason: he works hard to master his craft. As well, his enthusiasm to melt our metal together just feeds our enthusiasm for these marquee lights. We're in a tornado of good feelings here folks!

So Ian tell us a little about you.  What do you do by day?
By day, I am a welder for a custom architectural stainless steel fabricator.

What do you do by night?  You know, like Flashdance, welder by day... stripper by night?
Ha. Welding isn't just my day job.  When I'm not at work welding, I'm with friends in garages and we're working with metal.

What attracted you to the welding profession?
I always looked up to welders.  I had been a sheet metal worker for awhile and I would see the respect that the respect that the welders received when they walked onto site, and I liked that - I wanted that.  Being a great welder is an acquired skill, you have to learn and practice to be great.  I love working with my hands - I am feeding myself by working with my hands.

Ian, what is your favourite thing about being a welder?
All of it.  Everything adds up to a finished product in the end.  I take great pride in the details - the weld may take only thirty seconds, but you just spent three hours of prep the material.  I love every single part of it.  Each step takes time, no rushing.  I had worked with a world renowned blacksmith for some time and he taught me about perfection and producing quality work.
Picture
What motivates you?
I'm motivated by progression and self growth.  Developing my skills further, gaining accomplishments. Your skills, your accomplishments are things in your life that nobody can take away from you.

Who or what inspires you in your career?
The world is full of so many talented people and with social media you can see these people and their work so easily.  I'm motivated by masters of their trades - I want to be a master of my trade.  I want people to see my work and think, "Holy shit!" like I do when I'm looking at the work of the people who inspire me.

What tool could you not live without?
My leatherman, welder, and motorcycle.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
When I was starting out my goal was to make more money per hour than my age.  Now my goal is to work on fabrication projects that are exciting for me.  Ultimately, I'd love to move into supercar and custom car work.

Do you have any tips or tricks to share with our readers?
If you want to be good at something, practice your heart out.  Keep at it.  Keep learning, growing, and improving your skills.

What about advice for anyone considering becoming a welder?
Enter the trade with humility and with expectation that you’re not going to start at the top.  You're not going to be welding right away - you have to grow up through the trade and you'll get to do more as you move up through.  Take the time to perfect each thing that you learn.
Picture
What motivates you when you're not at work?
Actually my trade has taught me a lot about what is important.  I have high standards for the way things have to be.  Anything worth doing should be done right.  No half assing - no exceptions.

Do you have any favourite places to go or things to do in the city?
Places?  Hands down the Bow River, and my dad and I spend a lot of time at KMS Tools.
Things to do?  Ride my motorcycle and build vehicles.

Any parting thoughts?
Keep your eyes open... everyone can teach you something.

Initiation and Execution - That's what Brett stands for. Brett spent many of his childhood years on a farm. Having the freedom and time to explore his imagination and surroundings at an early age, his creativity grew and flourished. Dismantling bicycles, building forts and building cities out of Lego, creation was in his blood at an early age.

After moving around Alberta for a couple years with his family, he finally settled down in the Calgary area. In 2005 Brett attended post secondary education at SAIT where Brett found his calling in Design.

Since graduating in 2007 from Mechanical Design Technology, Brett has worked at many prestigious design and manufacturing companies where he has had the opportunity to build public art, electronics enclosures, architectural features, and heavy oil and gas equipment. Brett currently leads a design team at a local stainless steel manufacturer where he leads large scale custom manufacturing projects in the world of architecture and construction.
Picture
I've always been a creator. It seems the more I work in the industry, the easier things come to me. Design is my passion. It's what wakes me up in the morning and keeps me up at night. I'm in my element when I'm surrounded by trades people, like minded designers and creatives. Getting to help a creative or entrepreneur see their ideas go from thoughts and sketches to tangible objects, and working closely with the people who are building these objects is my reward.

If I could give advice to anyone, there are 3 things that I would say:
  • Initiate - Your intrinsic motivation is key. If you don't love what you're doing stop. If you ever say to yourself "I wish I could.." then stop wishing and do. If you every feel like you're not moving forward, then move forward.
  • Execute - We are our own worst enemies. The fear of failure, sometimes the fear of success? Don't procrastinate and just do.
  • Find your passion - Not everyone is meant to be working a 9-5 job. If you ever think to yourself that you would rather be running your own restaurant, maybe you should be?

To close, I want to say thank you for your support and electric excitement as we #LightUpYYC.

You Rock Calgary!

Born and raised in Newfoundland, Lacey Haskell, relocated to Calgary in 2005 with her high school sweetheart and a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Visual Arts, in hand...

Picture
After a short time in the city I landed a sculpting gig with a local fabricator where I had the opportunity to work on some exciting and large scale public artworks.  Through the years I'd grown up through the local fabrication company discovering that hearding cats through forests is one of my specialities, and so I've found a natural fit in the role of Project Manager for custom fabrication projects ranging from large public artworks to science centre exhibitions.

When I'm not Project Managing, or HKLux'ing, you will find me further pursuing my passion for making, holed up in my house, refinishing furniture and creating new home decor out of previously loved objects under the name Feathering My Nest.

My loves are my fiancé, family, friends, kitties and a good bottle of bubbly... you can find me in a sweetly curated booth at local vintage markets around Calgary and all over the place on social media:
